Voice of a Voyager

Our first presenter of this year was Keala Kahuanui, a local Hawaiian cultural resource teacher. A worldwide voyager aboard the Makalii, Keala shared experiences and lessons on sustainability from voyaging. Sharing about the process and journey they took to become a navigator, a voyager. The hardships of being out on the open ocean for days at a time but also of the rewards. The accomplishments and the sharing of stories from across the Pacific. Keala helped the students to identify and examine wa`a plants in the garden. During our two minute kilo, Keala also helped the students to understand their location by teaching cardinal directions in Hawaiian. Explaining that by using your body, using the stars and surroundings you can identify your location and where home is, you can never be lost.
