Spring Has Sprung
Spring has Sprung! Our flowers are jumping, our trees are bursting with buds and our onion bulbs are expanding. With our extending morning sunlight and increase in rain water the garden has just exploded with life. Though Hawai`i is in the tropics and our seasons change little, there are noticeable changes. The garden has provided a great space for our students to observe the subtle changes in our tropical seasons. Check out some of our exciting highlights and photo gallery from the 3rd quarter garden classes below.
Exciting Highlights
400+ pounds of crops were grown and harvested by the students. All of these crops were either used in garden snacks or offered to our school community.
9 community members dedicated over 80 hours of garden volunteer time. One of our amazing volunteers is Braydon Jadulang, is a Waimea Middle School and Mālaʻai alumni. We appreciate our volunteers more than words can express!
Mālaʻai continues to serve all 205+ students of Waimea Middle School,
Our happy hens have produced over 50 delicious farm fresh eggs in the past quarter.
Some of the yummy garden tastings created by our culinary after school students included fresh egg omelets with garden veggies, savory and sweet crepes, radish kimchi, frozen banana ice cream, egg salad, and garden fresh sauteed veggies.
Mālaʻai is now partnering with the new P.E. 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes! We taught nutrition, heart health and hydration classes in the garden. Students also got the opportunity to track heart rate while creating delicious garden fresh smoothies on our Blue Zones bicycle blender!!
Mālaʻai continues to partner with the Boys to Men mentoring program, by providing a safe space for learning. The students of the mentoring program also spend time caring and nurturing the garden once a month!
A special shout out to Hal & Nicki Burchard and the Grosshuesch `Ohana for their major volunteer hours helping us restore a broken wall in the germination station, fix the hot water heater and for assisting us in getting a huge pile of macnut husks delivered to the garden!
