Mālaʻai 19th Birthday Celebration

This spring our little garden and community celebrated nineteen years of growing and learning together. Our celebration took on an open house format, welcoming community members, garden staff, school faculty, students and honored guests for an afternoon of conversation and healthy food.

Started in 2005 Mālaʻai began by clearing a bed in a kikuyu grass field and planting its first crop, kalo. Many hands and many years have turned what was once an open field into a productive and educational garden. Serving the students of Waimea Middle School and the larger community, mālaʻai has become a space for all to feel at peace and to learn. Focused on healthy lifestyles and sense of place our garden helps all who visit establish their pilina between themselves and this `aina.
