Makahiki Games

Honoring the Makahiki Season and the traditional games are one of the major highlights for students this time of the year and we at the garden love to support them in this culturally significant activity.

This year WMS ‘Ike Hawaii teacher Cherise Mundon took on teaching the students the Makahiki games. In the past, community member and wa’a voyager Keala Kahuanui taught the games to the students. All the teachers of every grade supported the practices and final games on the last day of school before the winter break. Aunty Holly from the garden supported the practices and supervised various games on the final day. Games included `ilu maika (rolling a puck like stone through posts), kūkini (foot races), moa pahe`e (dart sliding), `ō`ō ihe(spear throwing) and kōnane (checkers).
