Piko at Waimea Middle School

Waimea Middle School has a tradition of coming together for a school wide welcoming at the start of every Monday. Led by our Ike Hawaiʻi teacher Cherise Mundon, this piko ceremony is a moment for to come together outside for the weekly announcements and to chant our school mele, Malana Mai Kaʻū and E Ho Mai. Piko, meaning the navel or umbilical cord, can also be translated as the center, or the point of connection. When students began distanced learning in spring of 2020, so much was changing that we were afraid of losing our sense of school community. To create a space for students to come together wherever they were, Mālaʻai and Ms. Mundon began streaming live Piko from school and posting it to instagram and youtube. This has continued through the 2020-21 school year, you can find more videos on Waimea Middle School Youtube page.
