Creating Bonds

Mālaʻai is not only a learning space for our students and our community but also for others across the island. As we approached the end of the year we realized we had a variety of upcoming visits from other schools across the island. We love to support and uplift school gardens across our beautiful island. Our visitors were looking to tour our garden, get their hands a little dirty and gather a little inspiration.

Kanu O Ka ‘Aina Kindergarten teacher Jessica Sobocinski, brought her adorable students for a garden tour. They were amazing volunteers in the garden helping out with many garden projects.

Fiona Weingartner brought her group of 9 gap year college students to the garden to experience Mālaʻai and work alongside our wonderful after school garden club students. The highlight was making bicycle blender hummus using our own pigeon peas. A super fun day for everyone.

We hosted students from Connections Charter School in Hilo for the 3rd summer in a row now. As part of their afterschool program Studio Shaka, a group of students have come out to the garden and help us with various jobs. They are always energetic and hard working and they love to be in the garden. They have started their own large garden for their school and are looking to the future!

A group of students studying agriculture from Konawaena High School came up to the garden for a little tour and workday.
