“Aloha! My name is Lauren DeMent and I am beyond excited about my new position as the Hawaii Island School Garden Program Director. I believe gardens provide an opportunity to form a positive relationship with an environment and gain insightful perspectives on learning. As an outdoor educator and garden teacher, I appreciate the creative hands-on learning possibilities provided in a natural setting like a garden.”
Two of my most favorite garden activities (besides playing in the soil) include:
Storytelling to help explore new angles and discover the in depth details about a place and the cultural connections through plants.
. Creating art, crafts, and delicious creations with garden grown produce.
-Outside of the garden I can probably be found either surfing or hiking with my family. Also, I have a background in native forest restoration so a passion of mine is identifying native Hawaiian plants, birds, and even insects!
-A plant I look to for inspiration is the ʻulu tree. I appreciate the diverse resources this plant provides and adore the natural patterned design of the fruit skin, and the golden color of the fallen leaf bracts. Like the ʻulu tree I hope to grow and provide abundant meaningful garden educational resources for our local community to support a sustainable future.
I look forward to working with you all and growing together!
