Alumni Internship and Wai Kī Workshop

For the month of July, we had the pleasure of working with WMS graduate and rising 9th grader Aubrie Tabiesa. She assisted with regular summer upkeep and helped to plant perennials on the boarders, and crops that will be ready for the school year. Aubrie’s positive attitude and pa’ahana was an invaluable addition to the summer’s activities!

Aubrie also assisted Ms. Zoe with a special workshop, Wai Kī, at the Mauna Lani. In collaboration with Holoholo Kids Club leader Monica Hurley, we designed a tea tasting workshop where guests received a tour of Ho‘ōla, the garden at Mauna Lani that was created with support of Māla‘ai, and then got to taste the teas, learn about their medicinal properties, and then create their own combinations. Zoe and Aubrie harvested, dried and prepared 13 different plants that were be used for making tea. They included: mamaki, Jamaican mint, spearmint, rose, tarragon, lemon verbena, lemongrass, lavender, roselle, anise hyssop, mulberry loquat, and guava leaves. The workshop was fun and well received, and we hope to offer similar workshops in the future. Mahalo to Monica for the wonderful idea, and to Aubrie for helping to execute a memorable experience :)
