Mālaʻai Guava Sauce

At Mālaʻai we haev two guava trees and every year around this time we get a plentiful harvest. Sometimes there are so many fruits that we just aren’t able to harvest them all though we try. We recently harvested over 30 lbs of guavas and so our Garden Assistant Mr. Gabriel turned them all into a guava sauce. With its mild sweetness and smooth texture this sauce can be turned into many things. Used to make jellies, jams, guava butter, syrups, a bubbly fizz drink or even BBQ sauce. Check out how we do it.

Ingredients

  • Guavas, cut ends off and cut into quarters

  • Water, enough water to cover the guavas

Instructions

  1. First wash your guavas and prep them. Cut the ends off and then cut them into quarters. Place all the cut guavas into a large stock pot. I ended up using about 5-6 cups of guavas.

  2. Pour enough water to cover them.

  3. Cover the pot of guavas and place on the stove. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for about 15 minutes.

  4. Mash with a potato masher to squish the gauvas which will be very soft and the fruit will break down almost entirely.

  5. After mashing return to simmer for 10 minutes or until all is combined.

  6. Strain first through a colander for large pieces and then through a strainer to get finer pieces out.

  7. Once cooled your guava sauce is ready to be stored or used to create something else!

This is the Guava sauce! It keeps its notorious pink orange color and it tastes delicious!
