Request for Submissions to ‘Ike ‘ Ai Food Literacy Toolkit
Several HISGN partners are working to compile a comprehensive food literacy toolkit for P-20 Agricultural and culinary education. Please see the announcement below and contribute any Hawaii-based food education resources you may have to share!
“The UH West Oʻahu Community Food Systems Program, The Center for Getting Things Started, and the STEMS^2 master's program through the College of Education at UH Mānoa are teaming up to develop an educational food literacy resource toolkit for P-20 (preschool through post-secondary) educators who wish to support pathways for careers in food and agriculture. This toolkit will include lesson plans, videos, infographics, and other digital resources for use in classrooms, school gardens/farms, kitchens/culinary programs, and other educational settings.
ʻIke ʻAi, the deep, experiential knowledge of food and eating, is foundational to life in Hawaiʻi. Our ancestors in Hawaiʻi and across the world developed skills and practices that governed how they selected, grew, prepared, and enjoyed food in a way that supported individual, community, and environmental health. In a modern context, we can refer to this type of knowledge as ‘food literacy’.
While many excellent resources on food literacy and food systems education exist, this toolkit will highlight content specific to Hawaiʻi that showcases the foods, agricultural traditions, cooking methods, gathering practices, values, etc. that shape what the people of Hawaiʻi love to eat.
We appreciate that you as educators, cultural practitioners, elders, and community members invest time and heart into both crafting and gleaning powerful learning experiences for your students and keiki. We would therefore be deeply honored if you would consider partnering with us by sharing any Hawaiʻi-specific, food and agriculture-based lesson plans, videos, infographics, and other digital resources you have either developed or come across. All materials or ideas shared will be attributed to the contributor and/or author and linked back to the original website or other origin sources, as directed.
Contact jsobocin@hawaii.edu with questions. Mahalo in advance for your participation!”
