Growing the Garden Club
Since the pandemic our afterschool garden club, which focuses on gardening and cooking, has become a popular activity for students at Waimea Middle School.
This year we are fortunate to have our largest class yet with an average of 20-25 students each Monday afterschool. Together these students from all grades learn to create delicious and healthy foods from things in the garden and also how to add garden fresh ingredients to daily meals. Our students are always hungry when they come to garden club, so its important that they have delicious food to fuel them.
Students have created fresh vegetable pasta, omelets, veggie dips, bean dips, smoothies, herb butter, pickles, fresh pesto, cucumber salad, herbal simple syrups and guava jam.
We use a variety of cooking methods so students can understand the various ways in which you can process fresh foods.
Our students also get to spend extra time taking care of the garden and learning how much work it takes to produce delicious and healthy food that will sustain you!
