The 3rd Annual School Garden Workdays will take place on October 21 from 9:00am-12:00pm at four school gardens across the island. (We will host 4 school garden workdays in the fall, and 4 in the spring!)
Help get the gardens in shape for the school year ahead and connect with your local school garden and community members. The goal of this event is to increase residents’ exposure to their local school garden, and who is doing what within their local community. There will be guest presenters and delicious food from local vendors at each site!
The October 21 workday will include the following schools:
Keonepoko Elementary - Join Michelle Young at Keonepoko in Pahoa. Chef Justine Ma will be there to share about zero waste cooking, meal planning, and how to re-purpose your food.
Hawai‘i Academy of Arts and Sciences - Join Danielle Preston at HAAS. Christopher Holtz, a cultural practitioner and makuakāne (father) of one of our HAAS haumāna. Chris will be sharing information about kalo and ʻuala along with a sampling of kalo to taste.
Honoka‘a Elementary - Join Jess Sobocinski in the elementary garden. Uncle Ricky, ‘Ulu Ambassador from the Hawaiʻi ‘Ulu Coop, will also be there to share about canoe plants of Hawaiʻi and their role in food sustainbility and security.
Kona Pacific Charter School - Join Samantha Hooper at Kona Pacific. Marielle Hampton from UH CTAHR will share about making the most out of easy-to-grow herbs from teas to butters and pesto.
This event is a collaboration between the Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network and the Hawaiʻi Island Food Alliance, in partnership with Hawaiʻi County.
