"Popo‘ahi - Fireball" - Large kapa wall hanging with natural dyes and hand stitching by renowned Kapa Artist Roen Hufford of Waimea, Hawaii. Of Native Hawaiian descent, Roen was born on Molokaʻi and grew up on the island of Oʻahu. Her mother, the late Marie Leilehua McDonald, traced her family roots to the district of Puna on Hawaiʻi Island and the island of Molokaʻi, both rural areas known for maintaining many Hawaiian agricultural practices and holding firm to ancestral customs. Roen was a National Heritage Fellowship Recipient in 2023 and her work can be found in many contemporary Hawaiian art collections. This is a newly created piece, and one of her larger works that includes her trademark style of adding stitching to the cloth to creating additional layers of dimension and texture.
